Karsiveth Alaz was born into a minor Holder family on the scorched plains of Mekhios, where from boyhood he was transfixed not by scripture, but by the great pyne-solaar — the towering ceremonial flame-pillars ignited during Reclaiming rites, their white-hot cores burning offerings of incense and sacred text. The priests found his fascination unsettling; he watched the fire not with reverence, but with the cold patience of a man already calculating. When he ascended as a capsuleer, his crewmates took little time in branding him Pynesol — a corruption of pyne-solaar, spacer slang for the blinding, merciless heart of the flame — a name earned not only for his habit of letting battles burn long past the point of mercy, but for the particular stillness he wore while doing it. He flies under the Sarum banner still, his Apocalypse-class battleship Solaar's Judgment a name spoken quietly in the border regions, by those fortunate enough to still be speaking at all.
