USS Helena (CL-50) was a Brooklyn-class light cruiser, the ninth and final ship of her class, built for the United States Navy in the late 1930s. Commissioned on 18 September 1939, she played a significant role in World War II, notably during the Guadalcanal Campaign. She earned the nickname "Machine Gun Cruiser" for her rapid-fire 6-inch guns, which were instrumental in victories at the Battle of Cape Esperance (October 1942) and the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal (November 1942). After supporting operations in the Solomon Islands, she was sunk in the Battle of Kula Gulf on 6 July 1943 by Japanese torpedoes. Her wreck was discovered in 2018 by the research vessel RV Petrel.
